What is Grounding in Electricity?

What is Grounding in Electricity?

May 17, 2021

You’ve probably heard the term “grounding” before when it comes to electricity and your home.  As a homeowner, you likely understand the importance of electricity and how grounding helps ensure a stable flow of power to your house, especially during thunderstorms and other potentially dangerous natural disasters. But do you know why “grounding” is so important for your home’s electricity? What is Grounding? In simple terms, grounding is the most effective way to safely return electricity to the ground through your electrical panel. When an appliance or electrical device in your home receives excess electricity, a grounding wire helps to discharge that electricity safely outside your home and into the ground. This keeps your home safe from any hazardous electrical malfunctions or static electric shocks.  How Does Grounding Work? For most homes, the electrical grounding system is installed by connecting a ground wire to a metal rod that is driven into the ground below your home. The purpose of extending the electrical wiring system of your home into the ground is to safely get rid of excess electrical charges. Without proper electrical grounding techniques in place, surges of excess electricity can inflict harm on you or your home by potentially causing an electrical fire or even electrocuting you.   Electrical grounding comes into play most often whenever there’s a buildup of energy that results from something going wrong in the electrical circuitry in your home. While extreme surges of electricity tend to happen when lightning strikes your house or a transformer malfunctions, minor surges of excess electricity do happen several times throughout the day due to interactions between large appliances in your home.  Proper grounding ensures that even the slightest bit of excess electricity gets sent directly into the ground and keeps you and your home safe from any number of electrical hazards. Why Grounding Electricity Is Important for Your Home 1) Protects from death, injury, and damage If your home’s outlets and electrical circuits aren’t properly grounded, excess currents of electricity can end up passing through your appliances and end up shocking you.  This works similarly to whenever you experience static shock from grabbing a gamepad controller or some other electrically charged object.  Without a proper grounding system in place, surges of electricity can cause a buildup of energy that gets stored in conductive surfaces throughout your home. If you accidentally end up touching one of these conductive surfaces, that excess energy will end up running through your body, causing an electric shock. While static shock may lead to a momentary bit of pain, in some cases you could suffer severe burns or other fatal injuries as a result of electrocution.  In a worst-case scenario, the lack of electrical grounding would allow a power overload to cause an electrical fire, which is harmful not only to you but your property and belongings.  2) Helps Prevent Electrical Overload Having your home electrical system properly grounded also helps to prevent electrical overloads from damaging your appliances. In the event that your home experiences a power surge, your electronic belongings run the risk of getting “fried” if your electrical system isn’t grounded effectively. This could result in the loss of data on your computer or smartphone as well as the hefty expense of having to replace broken appliances. Grounding acts as a massive surge protector for the entirety of your home and eliminates any electrical threats from power overloads by sending them right into the ground and out of harm’s way.  3) Keeps Voltage Levels Stable Having your electrical system properly grounded helps to keep the power voltage levels in your house stable. Providing a safe place for excess electricity to go allows the distribution of power throughout your home to remain balanced. This ensures that the circuits in your electrical system don’t get overloaded to the point of posing a hazard to you or your home.  4) Controls and Directs Electrical Currents Grounding also helps to direct electrical currents to where they need to go in a safe and effective manner. By allowing for excess electricity to be sent to the ground, your home’s electric currents are able to avoid dangerous buildups of energy in random parts of your home. This then makes it easier for electrical currents to travel throughout your house without jeopardizing the electrical system or your safety. 5) A Cost Effective Way to Safeguard Your Home Above all, grounding offers a financially sound way to maintain and protect your home. Instead of needing to opt for an expensive or complicated method of redistributing excess electricity, directing excess power into the ground makes it easy and convenient to keep you and your home safe from any fatal electrical accidents. While it may not seem like a significant aspect of your overall electrical system, grounding is what prevents you from having to spend thousands of dollars on repairing your home due to electrical damage. On top of that, proper electrical grounding also helps in the consistent delivery of electricity throughout your house on a daily basis, which is extremely convenient in today’s age of digital technology.  How Do You Know if Your Home Is Properly Grounded? If you’re experiencing electrical problems in your home and aren’t sure if your wiring system is properly grounded, you should contact your local grounding expert immediately to check your system for you. Our team of electricians are ready and capable to assess any and all of your grounding problems to make sure your house isn’t at risk of falling victim to electrical damage. Don’t take a chance on your appliances and belongings – or worse, your family. Call us now and safeguard your home the right way.

How to Install and Test Your Smoke Alarm

How to Install and Test Your Smoke Alarm

May 13, 2021

While often thought of more as an annoyance when cooking than a life-saving device, smoke alarms are an essential part of keeping you and your home safe from fire.  According to research at Macquarie University, there are more deaths in Australia caused by house fires than there are from all natural hazards combined. That’s why it’s important to make sure your smoke alarm installation is up to standard in order to prevent you and your family from getting hurt in a residential fire. Here’s everything you need to know about installing and servicing smoke alarms the right way.  What Is a Smoke Alarm? Smoke alarms or detectors are devices that are meant to alert you whenever it senses smoke, as a means of indicating that there’s potential for a fire. These devices are typically housed in round, plastic disk-shaped enclosures and mounted to the ceiling. There are two main components of a smoke alarm — a sensor that detects smoke, and a mechanism that sounds an audible alert as a warning of the presence of smoke. Most domestic smoke alarms are powered using a battery and operate as standalone units, although in some cases smoke alarms can be interconnected. Types of Smoke Alarms While most residential smoke detectors in Australia share the same features, there are various methods of alerting occupants, including: Audible sounds Spoken voice warnings Visual strobe lights Emergency lighting Tactile alerts Smoke alarm types in Australia also may differ in terms of their method for detecting smoke. The two main types of smoke detecting methods are: Ionization Smoke Detection This method uses a radioisotope to ionize the air and issue an alert when it notices a difference in the air due to smoke.  Optical Smoke Detection Photoelectric or optical smoke detectors use infrared, visible, or UV light to detect changes in the air that would indicate the presence of smoke. If the intensity of the light falls below a certain level as a result of smoke, the detector immediately generates an alarm.  How Often Should You Test Your Smoke Alarm? You should be testing your alarms at least once a month to make sure they’re functioning properly. The most effective way to test your smoke alarm is to get a local electrician to come assess your smoke alarm system for you. This will ensure that you’ve covered all bases when it comes to protecting your home from fire hazards, including checking that both the detector and alarm components of your smoke alarm are working the way they should.  When and How Should You Install Your Smoke Alarm? Your house should have a smoke alarm installed at all times in order to keep you and your family safe from any house fires. Because of how vital your smoke alarm system is to the safety of your household, we recommend that you hire an electrician to help you install your smoke alarms. Getting an expert to install your smoke alarms is the best way to ensure your smoke alarms are working properly and are also placed in the best areas of your home to warn you of a potential fire.  How Much Does a Smoke Alarm Installation Cost? The cost to install a smoke alarm system in your house will vary depending on the unique needs of your house as well as the type of smoke alarms you decide to use.  If you’re looking for professionals to help you upgrade or install your smoke detectors and fire alarms, our team of certified electricians are ready to service your home today. Speak with our experts and get a free quote for your smoke alarm installation. Where Should You Place Smoke Alarms in Your Home? There is no hard and fast rule when it comes to proper smoke alarm placement. Since every house is different from the next, the best way to determine the appropriate smoke alarm locations within your home is to hire an expert with experience in placing smoke alarms in the perfect spots to give you the best chance of catching a fire before it starts. Contracting a licensed technician will also make sure you stay out of harm’s way when it comes to installing smoke alarms in harder-to-reach areas of your house, such as high ceilings that can only be accessed by ladder. To give you a basic set of guidelines for where to install smoke alarms in your home, the National Fire Alarm and Signaling code states that each smoke alarm must be: Installed on every floor of your property Located outside every bedroom/sleeping area Positioned so the siren can be clearly heard from wherever you are in the building. Suitable for all occupants’ needs (for example, those with hearing disabilities must be equipped with an alarm that combines audible, visual and tactile alerts) Kept away from breezy areas (for example windows and air-conditioning ducts) to allow the detector to accurately sense smoke Why Is My Smoke Alarm Beeping? Smoke alarms will put out a “beep” for two different reasons, although each reason has a different kind of beeping sound.  In the event that your alarm detects smoke, it will send out a loud, pulsating beep that will not stop until you deactivate the alarm. This is the smoke alarm indicating that it senses smoke. In other cases, the alarm may make a much more infrequent beeping noise, which is a sign that it is running low on power and needs a battery change. How Do You Change a Smoke Alarm Battery? The best way to change a smoke alarm battery is to have a licensed electrician change it for you whenever you schedule a home electrical inspection. As many smoke alarms are located in hard-to-reach places around your house, getting a certified professional to help you is the safest way to replace the smoke alarm’s battery. However, in situations where you’re able to easily access the smoke alarm, changing the battery is as simple as dismounting the alarm, opening it up, and then ensuring

However, if you familiarize yourself with the right warning signs of a given electrical hazard, you can stay out of harm’s way by preventing a hazard from turning into a disaster. What are Electrical Hazards? The simplest way to define an “electrical hazard” is as any type of hazard in your home or office that is directly caused by electricity. As the name suggests, this includes any dangerous situation where there’s a chance that you might get hurt as a result of coming into contact with electricity. What does that look like? Here’s 9 of the most common examples of electrical hazards you’ll run into in your home and how you can prevent each electrical hazard from happening: Faulty Wiring & Electrical Malfunction Faulty wiring is one of the biggest causes for house fires you come across in the news. Recent statistics show that over 78% of all house fires are due to electrical malfunctioning caused by faulty wiring. The best way to prevent your own house from catching fire is to get your home’s electrical system checked by a licensed electrician. Hiring a professional with the right expertise can help you to see if there’s anything wrong with your wiring system and take care of any serious electrical hazards. Inadequate Electrical Grounding Sometimes, there may be nothing wrong with the wiring system in your house; it’s below your house where the problem may lie.  Simply put, if your home’s electrical system isn’t properly grounded, you run the risk of overloading the electricity in your house. A buildup of excess electrical energy in your home with nowhere to go can result in a variety of “shocking” accidents, from fried electronics to a complete house fire.  As with faulty wiring, the easiest way to prevent electrical damage to your home as a result of poor grounding is to have a certified technician assess your grounding system. This should be done as part of a routine evaluation of your house’s entire electrical wiring. Using Electronic Appliances with Wet Hands One of the surest ways to cause an electrical accident is to handle anything that’s plugged into an outlet with wet hands. Your body is already able to conduct electricity on its own, and adding water to the mix only makes it easier for you to get shocked while touching wires and plugged-in appliances. How do you prevent this type of electrical hazard? Make sure your hands are dry at all times when using devices that are connected to an outlet. If you want to take it a step further, you can also have residual current devices (RCD) installed in your outlets, which will cut off the electricity to an outlet whenever it senses a shock. While this may not completely prevent an electrical injury from happening if someone has wet hands, it will certainly help to minimize the extent of the electric shock. Pouring Water in Electrical Fire In the event of a fire, your natural instinct may be to throw water on it to put it out. However, when a fire breaks out as a result of an electrical surge, adding water, which is a strong conductor of electricity, will only make things worse, and could even cause you to get electrocuted. As a result, the safest way to put out an electrical fire is with a fire extinguisher, which will not help the electrical current to spread. Should you find yourself without a fire extinguisher, try your best to turn off the power supply in your home and contact your local firefighters to help put out the fire. No matter the circumstance, always make sure to use caution in dealing with a fire resulting from electrical hazards. Unprotected Electrical Wall Outlets If your house has electrical outlets that are not protected by some sort of RCD, you run the risk of accidentally shocking yourself whenever you plug something in. This is especially dangerous if you have children, who are known to let their curiosity get the best of them and play around with things that could severely hurt them. There are several ways to prevent anyone from being able to get electrocuted from a wall outlet. However, the most secure way to keep everyone safe is to install safety wall plates on all your electrical outlets. These plates are designed to close shut whenever a plug is removed, making sure that nothing can come into contact with the electrical sockets. Improper Use of Extension Cords Using extension cords to power more appliances can lead to an electrical overload if used improperly. In some cases, this could result in an electrical fire in your home. There a several things you should avoid doing when using extension cords in order to prevent a serious electrical hazard: Don’t connect one extension cord to another Don’t exceed the rating of your cord Don’t allow extension cords to trip people over Don’t use extension cords to connect wires in the attic or ceilings. The best way to prevent electrical hazards caused by extension cords is to completely do away with them whenever possible. Instead, hire an electrician to help you install more power outlets in your house if possible. Broken or Defective Appliances Sometimes, one of your appliances may have its own issues with its electrical system, which could possibly result in an electrical overload of your house’s power system as well as the appliance’s. How to Make Changes After Getting Your House Rewired

How to Make Changes After Getting Your House Rewired

May 13, 2021

Still having electrical problems, even though you’ve just had your home rewired? As a homeowner, it’s important that you regularly have the electrical wiring in your house checked and replaced in order to make sure you and your family stay safe while also meeting all your modern electrical needs.  The problem is many electricians do a poor job of rewiring houses, leaving you with certain electrical issues that you have to deal with on your own. In many cases, this means you might end up spending more to fix the electrical rewiring than the initial cost you paid to rewire your house. However, it’s not always necessary to hire another electrician to rewire the house again. Depending on the issue, you can fix your electrical rewiring with it costing you a single cent. What is Electrical Rewiring? Electrical rewiring is a way of replacing and upgrading the electrical circuitry in your home by changing out old cables and possibly outfitting your house with new outlets or rewiring for light fittings. Sometimes, you may also need to replace your electrical service, including the main panel and any subpanels.  By law, you must contract a licensed level 2 electrician to help you with your house rewiring, as attempting to rewire a house on your own is dangerous and requires lots of expertise and experience.  Why Do You Need Electrical Rewiring? Nowadays, it’s easy to take electricity for granted. But without regular maintenance, you could find yourself unable to power your most used appliances and electronics, or worse, in a potentially harmful situation caused by electrical hazards.  That’s why it’s best to rewire your house before it’s too late, and well before it gets too costly. How Do You Know If You Need Electrical Rewiring? The first sign that your house needs electrical rewiring is when you start to notice small problems with the power in your home.  You won’t need to hire an electrician to perform full-scale electrical rewiring for every electrical problem. In many instances, the small power problems you experience may be caused by issues unrelated to the electrical wiring in your house, in which case there’s nothing to worry about. However, you’ll still want to think about having parts of your home rewired or at least checked for electrical rewiring in situations such as: Property damage caused by a natural disaster Frequent power overloading Knob-and-tube or aluminium wiring in your system Presence of old lead, fabric or rubber insulated cabling  Replacing your old fuse box with white ceramic fuses Installing heavy-powered appliances such as washing machine, dishwasher, and heating system Moving into to a new house or flat unit However, before you go ahead and get your home rewired, make sure to consult with your electrician on whether or not rewiring is necessary and how much it’ll cost you. With some electrical issues, you may be able get an electrician to help you determine how you can test the electrical wiring to see if it’s a problem worth fixing. How Can You Do Electrical Wiring Yourself? Under NSW Wiring Rules, unlicensed individuals are prohibited from performing any electrical work such as home rewiring, even if it’s your own home. For any electrical work that needs to be done for your house, you’ll want to contact a certified electrician, who can give you a quote on electrical rewiring costs. That said, after your electricians have finished rewiring your house, you’re free to check the newly installed connections and evaluate the standard of work.  Here’s some things you’ll want to check on your own: Check for Tripping of Circuit Breakers  If your circuit breaker trips, that’s a telltale sign of power overloading. Following an electrical rewiring job, this usually means the circuits have not properly been installed and cannot handle the powerload from your house appliances. You’ll need to check that there aren’t any errors in the way the new wiring was installed or how the electric load has been calculated.  Faulty Outlets and Switches Outlets and switches are part of any electrician’s final checks. But you won’t be able to tell if the components have been properly installed until you’ve tried them for several days after.  With the multiple electrical appliances found in any home these days, it’s best to test the electrical rewiring by plugging appliances into new outlets. Check to see if there are any surprises like sudden sparks or irregular sounds. You’ll also want to make sure the light and power switches throughout your home aren’t acting up. Red Flags to Look Out For It’s not always easy to tell if the power problems you’re experiencing are due to the appliance you’re using or an issue with the rewiring in your home. However, there’s a few common signs that will tell you right away if you need someone to come check on the wiring in your home. Here’s some red flags to look out for that might indicate faulty wiring: Appliances malfunctioning Unusual buzzing or humming sounds Burning smells Burn marks on outlets and light switches Dimming and flickering of lights Notice anything suspicious? Make sure you get in touch right away with an emergency 24-hour electrician. The last thing you want is to put your life in danger. Conclusion Not all electricians will rewire a house the right way. To avoid letting any unnoticed electrical issues turn into serious health and safety hazards, you should take the time to test and assess the new wiring in your home after a technician has conducted electrical rewiring. However, the best way to prevent yourself from having to check on your wiring yourself due to electrical problems is to hire the right company for the job from the start.  That’s why you can trust [company name] to help you sort out all your electrical issues. When it comes to rewiring your house in Australia, we have the best licensed electricians to make sure you never have to worry about experiencing problems down the road.

What Is a Residual Current Device (RCD) and How Does It Work?

What Is a Residual Current Device (RCD) and How Does It Work?

May 13, 2021

Getting shocked by electricity is never any fun.  In some cases, accidentally coming into contact with a surge of electricity can be fatal, and has often led to electrical hazards such as house fires and electrocution. But there’s a way to prevent such terrible electrical accidents from happening to you, so you can stop an electrical hazard before it gets the chance to start. The solution? A Residual Current Device (RCD). What is a Residual Current Device (RCD) or Residual Current Circuit Breaker (RCCB)? A residual electric current device (RCD), also known as a residual current circuit breaker (RCCB), is a device that cuts off power in the event of a leakage current and keeps you out of harm’s way. They’re designed to break the circuit immediately when it detects small leakage currents, helping to prevent you or your loved ones from getting electrocuted.  RCDs are specifically set up to switch off the power supply within 25-40 milliseconds of any leakage current greater than 30mA. This is quick enough to avoid severely shocking you and sending your heart into an abnormal heartbeat rhythm, which is the most common cause of death by electric shock.  Why Do You Need a Residual Current Device? By law, all homes in Australia are required to have residual current devices installed as part of their electrical systems.  Beyond being legally required, RCDs also ensure the safety and protection of your home from electrical disasters. Not only do they help to keep your house safe from electrical fires, but they also add another layer of security to all your belongings, including sensitive data that might be stored on some electronic devices. More importantly, an RCD can save your life. In parts of your home where there’s a higher chance of being electrocuted (e.g. in wet areas with nearby power outlets), having a RCD installed could mean the difference between life or death in the event of an electric shock.  How Does a Residual Current Device Work? RCDs work by measuring the balance of electrical currents between two conductors using what’s called a “differential current transformer.” Basically, a residual current device uses a detector to track how much electricity is sent out against how much comes back through and checks to make sure the two amounts match. If it notices that the currents are unbalanced, that means there is a leakage of current, and it will quickly trip the circuit to prevent more electricity from flowing through to wherever the leakage is happening.  What Are the Different Types of Residual Current Devices? There are two types of RCDs: portable residual current devices and non-portable ones. While both offer protection against electrical hazards, they are not completely interchangeable, and should be used specifically for different situations. Here’s a breakdown of the advantages and disadvantages of each type of RCD: Portable Residual Current Devices Portable RCDs can be used in any socket outlet to protect individual appliances and pieces of equipment. They can also be used in combination with non-portable RCDs that are already installed on a given circuit. There are two kinds of portable residual current devices: plug connectors and stand-alone units.   Plug Connector Type This type of portable RCD is plugged into a wall socket and can be used to protect a single appliance or piece of equipment. Advantages Adds a layer of protection to any equipment whether or not the circuit comes with an RCD installed Allows the user to specify the power cut-off point to a particular appliance rather than the entire circuit Disadvantages Can’t protect against faults in fixed-wiring Needs to be tested frequently as it’s much more exposed to potential damage and abuse Portable Stand-Alone Unit The portable RCDs that are stand-alone units are typically installed in the circuit board, which allows them to protect multiple power outlets and any appliances and equipment that are connected through the outlets. Advantages Stronger protection than plug types of portable RCDs Protects multiple socket outlets and appliances as opposed to just one at a time Disadvantages Can’t protect against faulty fixed-wiring Not as cost-effective as non-portable RCDs if you’re looking to protect many pieces of equipment Non-Portable Residual Current Devices Non-portable RCDs are devices that are permanently installed on either a socket outlet or the switchboard. Below, we’ve listed out the unique advantages and disadvantages of the two different types of non-portable RCDs: Non-Portable RCD Installed on Switchboards Advantages Permanently protects against fixed-wiring faults  Installable on new, modified or existing electrical system Disadvantages Can result in an entire shut-off of your electrical system due to just one fault Installation can be costly if you modifications need to be made to your existing switchboards Non-portable RCD for Socket Outlets Advantages Fixed protection against electric shock and similar hazards Protects any device or appliance that’s plugged into the socket outlet Disadvantages Protection is limited to whatever is plugged into the specific outlet Must be replaced whenever the protected outlet becomes damaged Are RCDs Easy to Maintain? The ease of maintaining a residual current device depends on whether the RCD you’re using is portable or non-portable.  You can check if a portable RCD is working every time you use it, as it’s meant to be removed with little fuss. For non-portable RCDs, you can test the functionality by pressing the safety switch marked as “T” or “Test.”  Non-portable RCDs in particular should be checked quarterly, or every 3 months. Clicking the test button should shut down the power supply for the specific circuit in your home, indicating that the RCD is working properly. If the RCD is not working, you will need to consult with a licensed electrician to help you replace the RCD. Conclusion It’s easy to overlook the many safeguards that are put in place to help keep you and your home safe from electrical hazards. When it comes to residual current devices, it’s important to make sure that your electrical system is outfitted properly with RCDs and that each device is in good condition. If

What is Electrical Overloading and How Can You Prevent It?

What is Electrical Overloading and How Can You Prevent It?

May 13, 2021

Ever wonder why your appliance might suddenly stop working when you plug in another device?  Usually this means your circuit breaker has automatically shut off power to that appliance to keep your home safe by preventing an electrical overload.  Electrical overloading is one of the major causes of house fires, electric shock, and other accidents that result from electrical issues. While most appliances and electrical systems these days are designed to safeguard against electrical overloading, it’s still important to understand what an electric current overload is and the dangers of not dealing with it properly. What is Electrical Overloading? Electrical overloading happens whenever the amount of electricity running through your circuits to feed power to your devices exceeds the rated capacity of the circuit. When this happens, it causes the circuit breaker to trip and shuts off all power to the overloaded circuit.  Without a circuit breaker to keep the circuit from overloading, the buildup of electric power will end up overheating the circuit wiring. If the wiring heats up too much, it could melt the wire insulation and result in an electrical fire or shock if mishandled.  Signs of Electrical Danger from Current Overloading The first and most obvious sign that a circuit has been overloaded is when a breaker trips and cuts off all power. However, there are also other signs that may be more subtle, such as: Dimming lights Outlets or switches making a buzzing sound Outlets or switch covers that are warm Outlets or switches that smell burnt Outlets, switches, or plugs with scorch marks Appliances and/or devices that seem to be underpowered While many of these indicators could also be the result of some other electrical issue, it’s best to have an expert check your electrical system regardless to make sure you stay protected from any electrical dangers. Whatever you do, never attempt to investigate or fix any electrical issue on your own, as this could put you at a high risk of hurting yourself by exposing yourself to high voltage.  How to Prevent Electrical Overloading While it’s not always easy to anticipate when your circuit might experience a power overload, there are some steps you can take to lower the chance of having an electrical overload happen in your house. Replace Broken Appliances If one of your appliances is broken or defective, it could be drawing an irregular amount of power and causing your circuit to overload. In order to prevent an electrical overload from happening and causing an electrical hazard, you should look to repair or replace your appliances right away when you notice they’re starting to malfunction. This not only helps to keep your circuit from overloading but also prevents your other appliances from getting damaged as a result of a current overload. Fix Damaged/Faulty Wiring In older homes, the electrical system is likely to be outdated and in need of rewiring. While it may seem costly to get your house rewired, installing new cables and wires for your power system is a good way to ensure your property doesn’t get damaged as a result of electrical overload on old faulty wiring. Without proper wiring, your home is more susceptible to electrical fires and other forms of electrical damage. Take Note of Circuit Breakers that Keep Tripping Circuit breakers are meant to trip in order to help prevent electrical overloads. But when you notice that your circuit breaker keeps tripping regularly, it’s time to have an electrician come check your breakers to see if there’s a bigger issue that’s causing them to trip constantly. This will help to avoid any large-scale electrical overloading from happening in the future.  Calculate Your Electric Power Consumption A good way to preemptively stop your circuit from overloading is to take time to actually calculate how much power your circuit can handle and compare it against how much you’re actually using. This is helpful to determine whether or not your overloading problems are in fact the result of you simply using more power than your electrical system can handle. You can calculate the wattage capacity of your circuit by multiplying the amperage rating by volts. For example, with a circuit rated to 10-amperes at 230 volts, the maximum wattage allowed is 2,300 watts.  In general, try not to use up more than 80% of your maximum allowed wattage. This provides you with a buffer in the event you do end up using more than 80%. Also, the circuit is more likely to trip if your usage exceeds 80% of its power rating. Unplug appliances when not in use Although this may seem tedious, keeping your appliances unplugged when you’re not using them helps to reduce the strain you’re placing on your electrical circuit, while also preventing your appliances from getting damaged if an overload were to occur. Install safety devices such as GFCI outlets and surge protectors Using surge protectors, RCDs, and other devices that are intended to prevent electrical overloading from happening adds another level of security to your home’s electrical system. Incorporating these control measures can also help you to isolate electrical issues when they arise, so you can pinpoint problematic areas in your electrical system rather than having to assess the entire system. Hire an Electrician to Inspect Your Home The most effective way to prevent an electrical overload from breaking out into a fire or some other hazard is to have an electrician come inspect your home for any potential issues. By having an expert take a look at your electrical system, you’ll have the best chance of detecting any problems that need fixing. This ensures that you and your home remain protected against any electrical dangers. Conclusion While your home’s electrical circuits are designed to shut off immediately at the first sign of an electrical overload, there’s things you can do to prevent an overload from happening well before the circuit breaker trips.  The best action to take is to contact your local licensed electricians and have them evaluate your house

Electrical Fault Finding Techniques

Electrical Fault Finding Techniques

January 21, 2021

Electrical Fault Finding Techniques When it comes to fault finding in electronic circuits, you will need to have some understanding of basic faults and electrical diagrams. If you don’t, then you will need to engage a professional to help you. → CALL 1300 142 569 FOR IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE Electrical faults cover any issue in your circuits that cause your electrics to surge or trip and can become dangerous if they are not resolved. Understanding electrical diagrams can be a challenge because electrical circuits include components such as: Fuses Switches Lights Breakers Motors Pumps Relay Fans And more The first thing you will need to do when it comes to understanding a home fault is to check each component is working correctly. The most common issue tends to be when connections have become loose when fuses have blown or when there are faulty connections, relays or sensors. Before you can begin to test house electricals, then you will need to complete a visual check to see if you can locate the source of the problem. Using Specialised Kit Using equipment like a DVOM will help you to find your electrical circuit problem quickly as it checks the amps, volts, continuity and resistance as well as being able to test your lights for any specific voltage drops.  The Wiggle Test If you find that your fault seems to come and go then the best way to work out the source is to wiggle the wires and see if the fault happens. This can take some time if you don’t first try to work out the source of the problem, so it is sensible to check things thoroughly first. If the fault does occur when you wiggle the wires, then you can be confident that the issue comes down to a broken, dirty or damaged connection that will need to be replaced. Finding Electrical Faults Many people find electrical fault finding frustrating because it requires a good level of electrical knowledge and patience. However, to make it slightly easier, you should bear in mind that most electrical issues are caused by one of the following electrical circuit problems: Open Circuits An open circuit problem arises when an electrical connection breaks. This means that you will need to know how to test for broken wire issues in order to address the issue. To be about to do this, you will need to implement the continuity test. Short Circuits If the electrical flow is changed and diverts to a different path, then you will get a short circuit. These can be dangerous and result in fire or damage to your home. If you want to test house electrical circuits, you will need to check the resistance and difference in the electrical current flow between two points. Continuity Problems and Continuity Testing If you need to test your circuit’s continuity, you will need to use a multi-meter that will beep if the path is complete and functional. If the path is faulty and not working, then there will be no beep, and you will have located your issue. How You Can Solve Electrical Faults With Ease Completing these tests at home can be dangerous if you do not have the right knowledge or experience. If you are worried about any of your equipment, then it is a good time to call in the expert electricians to help. Working out how to reduce your energy bill at home can be challenging if you don’t know where to start. We are here to help you unlock the best ways to reduce your bills with our five top tips so that you can start saving immediately.  → CALL 1300 142 569 FOR IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE How To Save Electricity With Kitchen Appliances How to reduce your energy bill at home, the first place you can save money on your electricity bill is in the kitchen! Many people are shocked when they stop to consider how many appliances they have in their kitchen and that old or faulty appliances can result in a significant electricity bill increase.  Check out these quick tips for saving electricity costs: Start by checking the seals on your fridge are in good working order and then set the temperature to 4 degrees to get it working at its optimum level.  Next, make sure that you only ever fill the kettle with the water you need to save paying to heat water that will be left to go cold again.  Another great tip is to defrost any food that you are going to cook so that the oven is not on for as long as usual. Save Electricity By Checking Your Lights When you are thinking about how to reduce electricity bill costs at home, an obvious step is to think about your lights. The first step to reduce electricity use with lights is to make sure they are turned off when you leave a room. This can then be extended to cover usage when you don’t really need it. For example, turning the lights off when you watch a film can create a cool atmosphere and save you money. The next step is to consider the type of bulbs you are using as this can be one of the best ways to save electricity with minimal fuss. Going from traditional bulbs to energy-efficient ones will save up to 75% of your typical light consumption and help you live in a more environmentally-friendly way. Reduce Your Power Bill By Checking Your Thermostat If you love to be warm, you may be guilty of turning your thermostat up too much to get the house feeling cosy. Interestingly, many of us set our thermostat and then leave it without ever considering it again, and this could be the source of lots of expended energy that could have been saved. When it comes to setting your thermostat, you should aim to have it somewhere between 18 – 21 degrees, keeping your house at a healthy temperature and ensuring that you don’t freeze or bake. If you need more help with energy bills, then turning the thermostat down by one degree can save up to 10% of your energy costs! Shop Around for the Best Appliance Installation Service When the hot weather hits, many of us long for a powerful aircon system that will keep us cool inside. However, as aircon systems get older, they use more energy just like an old appliance. Aircon installation can be expensive and off-putting, but taking the time to shop around to find the best price may result in a new, energy-efficient system being affordable. To work out whether it is cost-effective to install a new system, you need to work out how much energy your current system uses (if you have one). One of the best ways to do this is by getting an in-home energy assessment from your energy supplier, this will provide you with an accurate overview of your consumption and tell you how to reduce it. Use You Curtains and Doors To Your Advantage Finally, take a moment to consider the role your curtains and doors can play in helping you to conserve energy. Keeping windows and doors closed will help keep the temperature stable and stop a cold breeze from making it frosty. Equally, by opening up the curtains on a sunny day, you will reduce the need to turn on lights. Plus, closing curtains will provide a barrier when it gets cold and keep your rooms warmer than ever. If you need any support with finding new ways to reduce your bills or need an expert to assess your current usage then let Mr Switch help you out. We provide an expert service at a fair price so that you can look forward to saving money and reducing your energy consumption – call us today! → CALL 1300 142 569 FOR IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE

RCD Switch

RCD Switch

November 15, 2020

We all need electricity in this modern age, especially when you consider the number of household items that we rely on to get us through each day! However, if left unchecked, electricity has the power to cause significant harm, and that is why we are encouraged to get support from professionals when we need to have our electrics checked. Electricians work hard to learn about the range of electrical systems on the market and are fully qualified to install life-saving devices such as the RCD electrical switch. → CALL 1300 142 569 FOR IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE RCD Safety Switch What is an RCD Device? How does an RCD Work? How Reliable is an RCD Safety switch Test button on RCD? Types of rcd devices? What Is An RCD Device? An RCD switch, otherwise known as a Residual Current Device, is an electrical switch that works to reduce the risk of electrocution and electrical fires. To do this, it cuts off the electrical power when something or someone makes contact with a live wire. Many of us are rightly wary of our electrical systems and use them safely, but there is always the chance of a fault that we are unaware of that can cause problems. How Does An RCD Work? If you are keen to understand how an RCD unit works, then it is pretty straightforward. The electrical safety switch monitors the current that flows through the active and neutral wires. Typically, this level of current is the same in both wires so that when there is a discrepancy, the RCD electrical switch cuts off the power. How Reliable Is An RCD Safety Switch? While nothing is entirely infallible, an RCD circuit offers up to 90% reliability as long as you have it checked regularly and maintained. The good news about this level of protection is that you can enjoy the peace of mind it brings knowing that the RCD protects against electric fire and shocks. What Is the Function Of the Test Button On RCD? The reason you have a test button on your consumer unit is to provide you with a simple way to ensure the RCD is working correctly. To test the system, you press the button and release immediately to simulate a fault; you can then check that the item has switched off. If it has, then you can be sure your system is working effectively. Make sure to turn your system back on after the test is complete! If you do not have a test button, then you do not have RCD electrical protection, and you should consider getting your system upgraded. What Types Of RCD Devices Are There? There are four main types of RCDs available: Portable RCDs – for use on extension leads. Meter Box Safety Switch – you will typically find these next to circuit breakers. PowerPoint RCD – attached to power points in rooms such as bathrooms and kitchens; these can be identified by the test button attached to the faceplate. Fixed RCD – located in the fuse box to protect all the connections on a circuit. The impact of a shock, electrocution or electrical fire is vast and wide-ranging, but the power of RCD protection means that we can continue to use our electrics with confidence. If you do not have RCD protection, then contact Mr Switch today to get an RCD safety switch price and book an appointment to protect your home. → CALL 1300 142 569 FOR IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE

How fire safe is your home?

How fire safe is your home?

August 25, 2020

It is a shocking fact that approximately 2,500 people are killed each year in residential fires, and another 500 die from carbon monoxide.* To help reduce these statistics we’ve included an important safety message from the NSW Fire and Rescue Commissioner which can ensure you and your family are fire safe and fire ready this Winter. Home Fire Safety Fire safety at home is one of the important factors when we look at safety features or parameters and there are many things that we need to consider when we talk about fire safety. If we take an example for the fire, suppose you are sleeping with your family and in the middle of the night you hear some sound and you smell of something burning and smoke and when you wake up to see what has happened then you get shocked to see that your house has caught the fire and in this scary situation here comes the point what you will be doing now to safely evacuate your family and pets do you have fire safety equipment for home available at your home. As discussed in the beginning you can see the mortality rate each year due to residential fires. That number is not good so that is why it becomes important for you to become aware of the basic home fire safety and also you should have fire safety equipment for home available. Below are some tips that you can follow for basic home fire safety: 1- Stay Safe in Kitchen: The kitchen is one of the leading sources of a house fire because many times what happens is that while working in the kitchen a small mistake can lead to a big loss because it has all the things that can catch fire easily.  2- Install Smoke Detectors: Smoke detectors are one of the most important fire safety equipment as it alarms you earlier about the fire and gives you and your family enough time to escape. 3- Install Fire Extinguishers: Domestic fire extinguishers are the most important fire safety equipment for home as it is the most important thing to get control over the fire before it turns into a huge fire exhaust. 4- Teach your children about fire safety For more information on smoke alarms and the best option for your home see our Smoke Alarm Guide. *Statistics and video from Fire and Rescue NSW

Pendant Light Installation & Guide

Pendant Light Installation & Guide

June 26, 2015

If you’ve flicked through any interior design magazine or caught up on the numerous home renovation shows lately, you’ll notice that pendant lighting is the design trend of the moment. While these lights are certainly a stand out piece, it’s important to consider the environment they’re going in in order to maximise their effect. Today, our experts have compiled a list of tips for you to keep in mind when considering your lighting options. OVER A TABLE When using pendant lighting over a dining table, we recommend pendants to be hung between 71-81 centimetres over the table to allow ample room underneath without sacrificing light quality. It is also worth installing a dimmer switch so the fixture can provide brighter light when tasks need to be done but can be switched to softer lighting while dining. If you have a longer table consider multiple pendants to create an interesting focal point in the room as well as provide additional light to the area. ENTRY WAYS AND HALLWAYS Pendants hung in hallways create a beautiful design feature in an otherwise solely practical space. Here you have the option to hang evenly spaced fixtures down the length of the hallway or cluster them together to create a focal point in the centre of the room. Be sure to consider any doors and windows that open into the space to allow enough clearance height for these. ABOVE A BENCH TOP Pendants are a great lighting option in kitchens providing spot lighting and adding an element of interest to your kitchen. Again, the ideal height for this is between 71-81 centimetres, so play around with a space between these heights to find the right spot. Make sure the fixture is high enough that you are not staring directly into the light while at the bench. IN THE MIDDLE OF A ROOM When using pendants in the middle of a room it’s best to ‘anchor’ the light with another piece of furniture below it; think chairs or coffee tables. This creates a point of interest for the piece as well as allowing you to hang the pendant at a lower height without creating an obstacle for someone to hit their head on. BY THE SIDE OF THE BED Pendants are now replacing bedside table lamps as the preferred bedroom lighting and are a great way to add ambient lighting. Bear in mind this limits the location of the bed so ensure you are happy with the room layout before installing to avoid having to move the lights. IN THE BATHROOM Pendant lighting is a fantastic alternative in the bathroom especially in front or to the sides of a mirror. The height should be enough that it does not get in the way while leaning over the sink but low enough for visibility during shaving or applying makeup. If the pendant alone does not provide this, consider adding down lights to compensate. As with any wet room lighting ensure your light has been rated for damp rooms.   For more specific pendant lighting options in your home, contact one our experts today on 1300 677 948.

Hager has recalled its mono RCBO range due to a potential defect that has been detected in these products. The said defect can result in an electric shock and that is why the company has recalled all the products sold or installed during July 2010 to Aug 2012 in Australia and has urged the customers and contractors to get these replaced immediately. The models affected are from the Mono range: AD310T, AD316T, AD320T & AD325T If you are unsure if this affects you, please contact Mr Switch Electrical on 1300 677 948. Hager B&R ensures that every product they offer has to go through a strict quality check procedure, where the product is thoroughly checked against diverse parameters. However, even a minor lapse in this quality check procedure can cause a major repercussion for the users, for which the company takes full responsibility and initiates to take the precautionary steps as soon as possible to avoid any consequences from arising. For those who are not much familiar with this device, RCBO is a switch installed on switchboards of power circuits and lighting. It is basically a circuit breaker, consisting of two circuits, which detect an imbalance or overload in a specific circuit. Commonly known as the safety switch, it works by switching off the circuit in case of overload, thus providing the much required protection against any electrical defect by keeping the user safe. Although the defect is quite rare and is considered to affect a mere 0.15% of the total products, this voluntary decision taken by Hager B&R is quite commendable and reflects their dedication and customer oriented approach. The contractors, who might have bought and installed a mono RCBO, have a major role to play in making this endeavor successful. They can support this initiative by following some steps. First of all, they should immediately stop installing this product. Then they need to identify the places or addresses where they have installed this product since July, 2010. Once they are able to locate the products, they should check the number mentioned on each reference which is installed. For any queries or questions they can contact Hager recall hotline through phone or email.
